Treachery in Tucson.
Tim Bee and Nathan Sproul team up for Arizona district 8 congressional race.

8-30-07

It looks like the State Senate President Tim Bee’s exploratory committee for CD-8 will be using Sproul and Associates as a consultant. There had been rumors that Bee was under pressure to use Nathan for his campaign. The confirmation of Sproul’s connection with Bee came from Ted Prezelski at Rum, Romanism and Rebellion. His August 24th story titled Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy focused on the presence of Garrick Taylor in an August 22nd Tim Bee interview done by Daniel Scarpinato of the Arizona Daily Star. Michael Bryan at Blog for Arizona quickly followed Ted with an expose on the Sproul connection.

The tentacles of Sproul got so deep and so astray that the significance of his involvement with Tim Bee cannot be ignored. First off Nathan and his firm has been hired by Wake Up Arizona! That is the group opposed to Arizona’s employer sanctions law (HB 2779) signed in June by Governor Napolitano. Besides opposing the new law the group has also stated their intention to target lawmakers that supported HB 2779, specifically Representative Russell Pearce and House Speaker Jim Weiers.

Pearce was the main sponsor of the bill so it is not a shock that a group opposed to the bill would target him. What is a shock is that Tim Bee was also a sponsor of the same bill that Sproul will be opposing as he simultaneously works for Bee and Wake Up Arizona! The other important fact is that Pearce is a close ally of former Representative Randy Graf. There is little love lost between Graf and Bee. Graf lost convincing to Giffords in 2006 for the same seat that Bee may now be seeking but still received over 100,000 votes. Many of Graf’s supporters were maniacal in their loyalty. Are they now expected to vote for someone employing a consultant who is targeting one of Randy’s few allies from the darkest days of his primary run in 2006? Let’s say only 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 of Graf supporters will even know or care about the connection. That could still be from 5,000 to 10,000 voters. Is Bee so cocksure that he can dismiss ten thousand votes?

Wake Up Arizona! is also backed by Tucson car dealer Jim Click. Click was one of the main backers of Graf primary opponent Steve Huffman in 2006. Huffman ran nasty attack ads against Graf that some felt only served to weaken the eventual parties nominee in the November general. We have heard rumors that Click is the one behind Bee’s selection of Sproul. The reasoning goes that Bee wants access to Click’s money and connections so he is taking his recommendation on whom to use as a consultant. What we do not understand is why (if it even true) Click would insist on the less than effective Sproul.

The Tucson area Democratic blogs are having a field day. The right of center Arizona 8th blog does not understand the reasoning. The extremely conservative and reactionary Sonoran Alliance had a story about Garrick Taylor but has been strangely mute on the Sproul connection. The confused but supposedly Republican ThinkRight AZ is solidly singing Bee’s praises. Given that the author is a close ally of Lisa James, whose husband’s firm, Gordon C. James Public Relations, is also part of Wake Up Arizona!, we are not surprised.

Nathan may have been licking his chops at the prospect of sinking his fangs into the coffers of the local Republian Committee in Arizona’s second largerst county. Immagine his disappointment when he realizes, according to some reports, they are broke. How convenient that the popular and independent thinking Pullen ally, Linda White, was summarly fired just weeks before Sproul and Associates show up.

Tim Bee was seen as a uniter by some in Southern Arizona but now seems to be teaming up with every bad actor from the 2006 CD-8 race. What’s next, Bee will hire Steve Huffman as campaign spokesman?
